Phuket Island is surrounded with many beaches, all of them with their own character. In Phuket you can find all kinds of beaches from the smallest to the biggest, or the most popular to the least popular. Phuket offers something for every taste, from the quick swim to the advanced diver, fisherman, surfer or sailor. There’s a beach for every one.

Mai Khao Beach

Mai Khao is almost 10 km long combined with Nai Yang. It’s the only real gateway on the west coast of Phuket. Aside from JW Marriott Phuket Resort & Spa, the area is largely undeveloped with only a few tourist business. This lonely beach is another area where sea turtles come to lay eggs. It is also home to what the Thais calls sea cicada, which is a form of marine life. The water here is fine for swimming during the dry season, but the rainy season brings big waves and strong currents.

Nai Yang Beach
(30 km from Phuket town)
Part of Sirinart National Park, Nai Yang is combined with Mai Khao beach to the north. The beach itself is on a along curving bay lined with evergreens The large coral reef is home to many different species of fish, and Nai Yang is well known as a site where sea turtles come to lay their eggs during the period from November to February. First class accommodations are available here and Nai Yang noted for its impressive forest of tall casuarina trees and as a picnic spot for Thais.

Pansea Beach
(24 km from Phuket town)
It is a small secluded quiet beach which runs for only 250 meters with fine white sand that glistens in the light and reflects off the clear blue sea. It has lively coral reefs and artistic rock formations embellish both ends that seem to frame the beach in one idyllic of a tropical beach paradise. The natural beauty of this small protected bay attracted the famous The Chedi and ultra-exclusive Amanpuri Hotel. This upgrade resort plays host to the international celebrity set who don’t mind paying the ultra-high prices charged for privacy.

Bang Tao Beach
Bang Tao is a large open bay with one of Phuket’s longest beaches. Is is 8 km long keeping cressent shaped bay with a gentle slope and absolutely pure white sand and is frigned with row of casuarina trees. The constant but gentle breeze on this bay had made Bang Tao beach very popular with wind surfers and it plays host to several international competitions each year. It was once used for tin mining ,but has since been developed to a luxury resort. The Laguna complex ,a massive five-hoel development with golf course, occupies most of it. Dry season, swimming is excellent and at the bay’s north end is a smaller bay, almost completely enclosed ,at the mouth of which is some fine coral. Patong Beach
(15 km from Phuket town)
Patong is the most famous beach and the center of the island’s nightlife. This soft white beach is long, white and gently curving. Tri-Trang Beach
Tri Trang is only suitable for swimming at high tide since the sea are filled with rocks and corals. Tri Trang is a good place for snorkeling in the clear deeper water around 40 - 50 meters from the beach, where most of the corals are to be found.
Tri Trang is one of the beaches around Patong with few people and no water sport activities. Only longtail boats on their way to Freedom Beach break the silence.
The only accommodation here is Merlin Beach Resort.

Karon Beach
(20 km from Phuket town)
Karon is the second largest of Phuket’s principal tourist beaches. Featuring and incredibly long stretch of squeaky white sand, Karon is less hectic than Patong but it still offers a full range of facilities, dining and activities. Kata Beach
(17 km from Phuket town)
The smallest of Phuket’s three tourist beaches, beautiful Kata is a scenic gem. Its clear water flanked by hills and picturesque Bu Island sits offshore. Kata retains a village feel at its northern and southern ends and it perhaps more family-oriented. The beach itself is broad and curving and structures bordering it are low-rise. The water is perfect for swimming and at the north end is a coral reef with many varied corals and fish.

Kata Noi Beach
A smaller beach south of Kata separeted by a headland. It is a quiet and peaceful retreat with a few hotels and little other development .The beach is superb, there is allot of fish that inhabit the rocks and corals along the beachless shoreline-stretching south.Kata Thani is the main resort dominating a wide area of the beach. There are a few small guest houses, plenty of restaurants and boutiques.

Nai Harn Beach
(18 km from Phuket town)
On the south end of Phuket, South of Kata Noi and north of Promthep Cape, the white beach of Naiharn could be seen. It is not the longest beach of Phuket, but it boarders the most gorgeous lagoon on the island with only a few hotels and a few bars and restaurants. The soft sand and clear water make it an ideal swimming and sunbathing spot. A wide variety of water sports ,windsurfing ,sailing, sunbathing can also be enjoyed ,but swimmers should be alert for the red flag warning of dangerous currents during the monsoon season from May to October.
This is also a popular anchorage during the dry season for bigger sail and motor -boats. If you like to look at boats then try to come here during the yearly King’s Cup Regatta. During this time you can see the boats competing against each other and also have a chance to take a closer look at them. (Bring you binoculars)
Nai Harn Beach, Phuket Hotels

Ao Sein Beach
Often overlooked due to its proximity to Naiharn, and because the connecting road runs through and under the Le Meridien Phuket Yacht Club, Ao Sein has a wan air of long lost glamour to it. Those who visited Phuket two decades ago recall that it was once one of the most popular and populace of Phuket island's southern beaches, and the bungalow operations still in situattest to its headier days. Today, a treacherous road - suitable only for experienced motorbike riders and four-wheel drive trucks - runs down to the small beach of sand and boulders and its cheif appeal is the epic view it offers of Naiharn and Promthep Cape

Rawai Beach
(17 km from Phuket town)
Rawai is Phuket’s largest established beach resort through the sea gypsy village at its north probably hasn’t changed much over the years. The main beach at Rawai is not great for swimming ,but the casuarina tree lined esplanade is perfect for sampling freshly barbeque seafood at the weekend – a favourite with the locals. This is also an excellent starting point for visit to the outlying of Coral Island, Lohn Island ,Raya Island – longtail boats and speedboats.
Rawai Beach, Phuket Hotels

Yanui Beach
Tucked between Promthep Cape and Rawai, Ya Nui Beach is small and is one of the best-kept secrets on Phuket island but perfectly formed. Only a small restaurant and parking lot are visible from the road but walk past them a few feet and you are rewarded with a beautiful sheltered bay framed with large rock formations and a coral reef.
Steep headlands at either end hem in this slice of sand which is visited by gentle waves from December to March. However, the onset of the monsoon season brings with it crashing surf and swimming during these months is not advised. A few small, inexpensive bungalow operations have established themselves in the wooded area to the rear of the beach.

Chalong Bay
(11 km from Phuket town)
Located on the south coast of the island, Chalong is Phuket’s principal boat anchorage and the islands largest bay. Chalong Bay has a long, flat shallow, muddy bottom. At ebbtide, water resredes as much as one kilometer. It’s very picturesque but unless for swimming. Most visitors to the islands south of Phuket depart from here and the bay restaurants are well known for their seafood. Charter to various places can be arranged and it is also the center of the island’s yachting business

Mittrapap (Friendship) Beach
Just south of Chalong, , there are several low-key and peaceful bungalows but the beach is muddy at low tide, when you can almost walk halfway to Lohn Island
Friendship Beach Resort, on Mittrapap is the usual meeting point for Americans on the island, and holds regular Sunday jam sessions for any rockers, jazzers or bluesmen who happen to be passing.
Freedom Beach
A ten minute ride by longtail boat out and around the headland at the extreme southern tip of Patong Beach brings you to one of the most beautiful and isolated beaches on Phuket.Accessible only from the sea, this isolated beach with its dazzling white sand will make you forget about the hustle and bustle of Patong.
This is a private beach that is open the public, there is a small restaurant and a few beach chairs. Visitors arriving by longtail boat are welcome, but others arriving independently may not be allowed to stay. While you laze around on the beach you can enjoy the beautiful scenery and magnificent rock formations that guard the entrance to the bay.
Figure on THB 400 for an hour, or THB 1.000 for the day (Longtail boats will hold six to eight passengers).
